The University of Wales, Aberystwyth, Department of Information Studies and
Information Automation Limited's Centre for Information Quality Management win JISC
funding
The Department of Information Studies
(DIS) of The University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and
Information Automation Limited's Centre for Information Quality Management (CIQM) are pleased to announce the award
by JISC of funding under its call Monitoring and Evaluating
User Behaviour in Information Seeking and Use of
Information Technology and Information Services in UK HE
(JISC Circular 1/99).
The Department of Information Studies and the Centre for Information Quality Management are surveying end
users of Electronic Information Services and Electronic Information Services provision within
Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The team from Aberystwyth suggested to JISC that there was an absolute logic in
running two of the four work strands proposed in the original Circular together, and JISC
have accepted this approach.
The JUSTEIS (JISC Usage Surveys: Trends in Electronic Information Services) project began in September 1999 and will use critical
success factors and critical incident technique to
assess user behaviour, and a Web survey of all HEIs backed up
by interviews to determine Electronic Information Services provision. The survey of Electronic Information Service users will cover a range of disciplines and types of HE
institution, and the sampling frame will be designed with the aim of
monitoring trends in Electronic Information Services use. Electronic Information Services can be interpreted
in different ways by different groups of people. One of the first tasks
is to develop a taxonomy covering the whole
spectrum of Electronic Information Services provision which will be used in both surveys.
The award is for £105,212 and the work will run over two academic years. The results from the first cycle should be available in Spring 2000.
Other work proposed by the JISC Circular is being undertaken by a team at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle.
